About Department Of English Language & Literature
Department of English Language & Literature is one of the most distinguished Departments of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, City University. Since its inception back in 2007, the Department of English has been offering Bachelor of Arts in English through a trimester system. Later on, Master of Arts Program comprising of Master of Arts in English was introduced in 2015. Providing education with real life skills and moral values is one of the core objectives of the Department of English, City University. The curriculums have been developed to promote critical thinking, creative faculty and openness for the students to learn so that they get required knowledge and skills to tackle the challenges of the 4th industrial revolution.
The department is immensely indebted to the founding Head of the department Professor Nurannabi Sarkar, valiant freedom fighter late Mr. Aziz-ul Bari Khan, former Head and Associate Professor, and Professor Mustafizur Rahman, former Pro- VC & Professor of English for their invaluable contribution to the department
Department of English offers dynamic and contemporary courses viz; Media and Message, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, Translation Studies, Continental Literature, South Asian African and Caribbean Literature, ELT, Syllabus Design and Materials Development etc. The faculty members are research oriented, inclined and dedicated to work together as a team and strive hard for the further advancement of the Department through dynamic teaching, learning and research.
Students in the department are motivated to pursue their studies with a view to preparing themselves to assume their roles as responsible members of family, society and country. The department has flourished over the years. The main goal of both the undergraduate and graduate curricula is to furnish the students efficiently to successfully face the challenges of employment. Equipped with 23 core faculty members and 04 adjunct faculty members, the department asserts to be one of the most dynamic departments of the University.
Apart from the academic programs and courses, the department also organizes different workshops and seminars with the participation of the resource persons from home and abroad. All these activities keep the learners and faculty members active and research oriented about different perspectives of the postmodern world. Dr. Bina Biswas from India was the keynote speaker in a recent seminar entiled “The Increasing Relevance of Tagore in Today’s World”. Lately, a workshop on Reading Fiction was conducted by an eminent fiction writer and the Bangla Academy and the Ekushey Padak awardee Hasnat Abdul Hye.
Department of English takes pride in the five functional and full-fledged clubs i.e. Cultural Club (CC), City University English Literary Lounge (C E L L Literary Club), Sports Club (SC), Art of Good Life Club (AGLC), and Language and Debating Club (LDC) for nourishing the students and developing their soft skills to enable them to adapt themselves to the challenges of the 21st century. The clubs are also quite instrumental in flourishing the creative faculties of the learners of the department and in motivating them toward the cardinal pursuit of higher education. Beside the academic activities, the department arranges a number of cultural events to foster multidimensional skills of the student and transforming the students into a human resource.
The department is working closely with Internal Quality Assurance Cell ((IQAC) and following the guidelines of the Bangladesh National Qualifications Framework (BNQF). This continuous process is a clear manifestation of the department’s commitment to achieving the highest standards in academic excellence.
